Q & A with Kate Callaghan

What’s the story behind your business?

For as long as I can remember, I have been interested in nutrition, not just for performance and aesthetics, but for total wellness and longevity. Some would say I’m a nutrition nerd. Despite following conventional food recommendations down to the letter for the majority of my life – low fat, healthy whole-grains, vegetable oils – over the years, I experienced many health complications such as eczema, auto-immune problems, female hormone imbalances, digestive distress and coeliac disease. The quick fixes of conventional medicine failed to help, forcing me to delve deeper into the literature and find a solution to help myself recover and regain my health. After much research and self-experimentation, I came across the Weston A. Price Foundation. The mission behind the WAPF is based on ancestral patterns of eating and living, with a focus on restoring nutrient-dense, whole-foods to the human diet and eliminating the processed, packaged foods which have become so prevalent in our diets today. This approach made sense to me and was backed up by good science. So I became a true nutrient seeker, turned my food pyramid upside-down and, lo and behold, my health improved dramatically. Today, I no longer suffer from eczema, my coeliac disease is under control, I rarely am in a bad mood, my energy levels are great, the food I eat is enviably delicious and I am HAPPY! When it comes to health, I have run the gamut and learnt many lessons along the way. Today I am excited to share my knowledge with you to empower you to take control of your health so you too can start thriving, rather than just surviving.

What was your first job?

As soon as I turned 14 and 9 months (the legal age for working), I got my first job working in a news agency.

When you decided to start your own business, what was your big “why”?

To make sure others would not have to experience the same health issues as I had, for as long as I did, without any long term solutions.

What have you had to give up?

Money (to study at university) and time (also to study). But I see it more as an investment, rather than something I have had to “give up”.

Your proudest achievement to date?

In business – openly talking about my struggles with hypothalamic amenorrhea through my blog. Little did I know at the time, this would serve as a huge support for other women experiencing similar issues. In life – learning to love myself and let go of perfectionism.

What are some of the most exciting projects you’ve worked on?

Sarah Wilson’s “I Quit Sugar” program. The Ancestral Health Society of New Zealand- I am one of the founding members.

I recently had a 5 year old client with cystic fibrosis and coeliac disease with a range of symptoms (digestive, skin and behavioural), which we managed to resolve purely through diet!

What would you tell your younger self not to do?

1. Be more gentle on yourself

2. Don’t go on the pill!

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Keep a daily gratitude journal. This has allowed me to shift my perspective and attitude into one that is more positive. Once you start writing down all of the little things you are grateful for, you will start to realise how amazing your life really is. This then has a snowball effect – giving thanks will encourage more and more positivity and prosperity into your life.

What’s next for you and your business?

I am in the process of writing a book on women’s reproductive health. It’s a massive task, but it is greatly needed.
